Recent reports have surfaced of a new version of digital hacking called GPS Spoofing where hackers manipulate an Airplane’s GPS coordinates which can result in dangerous consequences.

They specifically include illegal ground-based GPS systems that transmit wrong location transmissions. These illegal systems mostly work in conflict zones and are used to deflect incoming missiles or drones.

In fact, a staggering 400% increase in GPS spoofing incidents have been reported and the majority of them were targeting commercial airlines.
To add to this, an incident happened with a Western airline where its aircraft clock was forwarded by years. As a result, a complete disruption happened in its communication system.
Furthermore, the name of the airline and flight is yet to be determined.

- For instance, a Bombardier Global Express received a false GPS position on departure from LLBG/Tel Aviv; consequently, a controller addressed the pilot regarding unauthorized operation close to the restricted area.
- Evidently, an Embraer Legacy 650 lost GPS signals in Iraq and was close to entering Iranian airspace without authorization.
- Additionally, a Boeing 777 fell victim to a 30-minutes GPS spoofing in the Cairo FIR where the aircraft position was replayed as a stationary point over LLBG.
Moreover, the most threatening part is….these three are just a fraction of the total.

Ultimately, it’s time to pay attention because danger is looming over us. The safety of countless lives depends on the robust GPS and a dedicated effort is needed in this direction from all stakeholders.
