We all knew about the famous arrest of Telegram’s CEO Pavel Durov due to the App’s inability to curb the surging activities of cybercriminals via Telegram. 

From last few years, Telegram has become the safest abode of cybercriminals to communicate and conduct all kind of illegal activities for their domain.

Telegram promoted its app to be the first which is providing end-to-end encryption to its users, however the feature soon become the USP for cybercriminals to use it for their nefarious purposes. 

Moreover, Europol recently disclosed that hackers used this app to coordinate with their counterparts during recent ransomware attacks in Europe.

Cybercriminals have been using the anonymity of Telegram’s channels since its inception. In 2023, renowned cybersecurity firm Cyberint discovered that these channels were being used for stealing credit card data, leaking public databases, promoting obscene content, etc.

Hackers utilize the anonymity feature of the app to remain invisible without ever revealing their contact details. 

The infamous “Fraud Telegram” scam was the result of its minimal identity verification where cybercriminals stole the complete credit card information of thousands of users. 

Why Telegram Is Not Acting Fast Enough Despite the CEO’s Arrest? 

After the arrest of its CEO, Telegram tried to regulate the platform by banning a few objectifying channels, however, its efforts are still lagging behind expectations. 

The main reason is its policy to prioritize user privacy. Their thinktank is still determined to prioritize the privacy of their users over security and that’s why law enforcement is struggling to detain criminals.

Nobody can deny that most cybercriminals are still using Telegram. Currently, it has around 950 million users; therefore, it will be difficult for the law enforcement unit to curb the rampant illegal activities on the app.
