Google on the Brink…! Will Face Historic Split Under DOJ?

Tech giant Google is on the brink of a historic split due to the proposed plan by US Justice Department (DOJ) after several years of investigation found monopolistic conduct by the company.

Moreover, it might also have to share the user’s search data with its competitors. With this, the biggest question is whether this probe is the beginning of the end of an era?

The Antitrust Storm: Why is Google in Trouble?

For years, it has been alleged that its products like Chrome, Play, Android, and now Gemini, are being used unethically to benefit its search results and search-related products.

The probe also found that the tech giant has paid Apple, Samsung, and other device manufacturers to make Google their default search engine and further consolidate its monopolistic position.

If DOJ Succeed: How the Breakup Could Look Like

If everything goes according to DOJ’s plan, Google may have to trim off significant units of its company like YouTube, the Android operating system, and its advertising arm each subject to a separate regulatory authority.

The breakup if happened, can give smaller and newer players a level playing field to thrive in the industry.

Google Response: Called Proposal Radical and Sweeping

In a blog post, the company termed the proposal as radical and sweeping. It said the move will hamper the business model and can create privacy risk if they would be asked to share users’ data with other players. It also warned that the step could lead to pricier smartphones.

What This Mean to Users Like Us?

It can pave the way for new companies to come and create a competitive field. This would give benefits to the one who will provide better services at fairer prices.

However, companies that depend on Google’s integrated system might experience an existential crisis.

In Conclusion: Google on the Brink? An Uncertain Future Ahead

The DOJ’s concentration over the rampant monopoly of Google can become more defined in the coming months. The Department has 20th November as the deadline to present a more balanced set of remedies, whereas the tech giant has 20th December as the last day to present its set of proposals.

It makes the future of Google much more uncertain as Justice Department concentration becomes more defined. In the event that this historic breakup occurs, the impacts are expected to be truly global. And even in the case where the Split does not occur, the consequences might easily go international.
